The rak‘as of tahajjud, ishraq and awwabin

Question

(1) In the noble hadith [it is stated] that for two rak‘as of ishraq there is a reward like that of hajj and ‘umra; that by two rak‘as charity (sadaqa) is given on behalf of all the limbs; and that for praying two rak‘as provision for the needs of the whole day [is promised]. What I wish to ask is: to obtain all these merits, must one pray two rak‘as separately [for each], or are just two rak‘as sufficient? (2) How many rak‘as of [the prayer of] duha should be prayed — how many at most and how many at least?

Answer

(1) If one makes the niyya [for this] in the ishraq prayer, then these same two rak‘as will, in sha’ Allah ta‘ala, suffice for all these purposes. [ar]لكل امرئ ما نوى[/ar] “Every person shall have what he intended.” (2) [The prayer of] duha is four or eight rak‘as. For tahajjud, eight [rak‘as] are mentioned most often; but there is no harm in fewer or more either. (3)
