Nafl prayer in congregation to make up prayers missed over a lifetime
Question
(1) [What about] performing the “making up of prayers missed over a lifetime” with the notion that by performing it all the missed prayers of the year are forgiven? This make-up prayer is performed in this way: two rak‘as of nafl prayer in congregation. Is this prayer established in the Islamic Shari‘a or not, in which book of fiqh is it written, and is it in any book of hadith or not? (2)
Answer
(1) This prayer is not established by the Shari‘a; praying nafl in congregation is makruh. To pray two rak‘as in this manner and believe that by it the prayers missed over a whole lifetime are forgiven is entirely contrary to the principles of the Shari‘a.
