The number of rak‘as of tahajjud

Question

There are different narrations about the number of rak‘as of tahajjud. Please inform us of the sound narration.

Answer

As a rule, the blessed habit of the Prophet ﷺ was to pray eight rak‘as of tahajjud; however, this limit is not like that of a fard prayer, in which neither decrease nor increase is permissible.
