The ruling on bina’ (resuming the prayer) when ritual impurity occurs

Question

If a muqtadi incurs minor ritual impurity (hadath asghar) during the prayer, should he perform wudu’ or not? If he goes to perform wudu’, how far may he go, and may he [continue to] pray with the same niyya or not? If he is praying behind the imam, when should he perform what he missed? In short, kindly explain all the cases relating to bina’ (resuming the prayer). Explain, and you will be rewarded.

Answer

If someone involuntarily and unintentionally incurs minor ritual impurity in the prayer, the Sacred Law permits him to leave at once in silence, perform wudu’ with the nearest water, come back to his place, build upon his prayer (bina’) and repeat the pillar (rukn) in which the impurity occurred.
