Participation of a deaf follower in the congregation
Question
A man is deaf and his eyesight is also weak. When he prays behind the imam, sometimes, because he cannot hear the imam’s voice, he misses a sajda. In such a condition, is it more virtuous (afdal) and better for him to pray with the imam or alone? And if he misses a ruku‘ or a sajda, what should he do?
Answer
If the ruku‘ or the sajda was missed altogether, his prayer is not valid. If it was not done together with the imam but he performed it after him, the prayer is valid. He should perform ruku‘ and sajda by sensing the ruku‘ and sajda of the person next to him. If even in such a state of disability he obtains the merit of congregation, he deserves a great reward.
