With what intention to join the congregation after having prayed oneself

Question

With what intention should a person who has [already] prayed his zuhr or ‘isha’ join the congregation?

Answer

With the intention of a nafl prayer. [ar]ثُمَّ اقْتَدَى مُتَنَفِّلًا[/ar] “Then he follows [the imam] as one praying nafl” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar with Radd al-Muhtar, vol. 1, p. 479, Nu‘maniyya edition).
