Tasmi‘ and tahmid
Question
Question: in “Bihishti Zewar” (“Heavenly Ornaments”), part two, in the description of the method of performing the fard prayer, it is written that one should stand up while saying “sami‘a Allahu li-man hamidah” (سمع الله لمن حمده), and in “Bihishti Gawhar” (“The Heavenly Pearl”) it is written that the munfarid (one praying alone) says both, i.e. “sami‘a Allahu li-man hamidah” and “Rabbana laka l-hamd” (ربنا لك الحمد).
Answer
Both men and women, when praying alone (munfarid), should say in full “sami‘a Allahu li-man hamidah, Rabbana laka l-hamd”. If, not knowing the ruling, someone said only “sami‘a Allahu li-man hamidah” and did not say “Rabbana laka l-hamd”, there is no sin on him, and the prayer is valid.
