How much of the qiyam is fard
Question
(a) Is the qiyam (standing) fard in all prayers — fard, wajib and sunna — or is there some restriction? (b) In the last two rak‘as of a fard prayer, what amount of qiyam is fard and what amount is wajib? In “Bihishti Zewar” (“Heavenly Ornaments”) it is stated that the prayer is valid if one stands silently for as long as it takes to say “subhan Allah” three times, whereas you have stated that qiyam of the length of the obligatory (fard) recitation is fard (with reference to “al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
Answer
(a) [ar]ومنها القيام في فرض وملحق به كنذر أو سنة فجر في الأصح[/ar] “Among them [the fards of prayer] is the qiyam in a fard [prayer] and in what is attached to it, such as a vow (nadhr) or the sunna of Fajr, according to the most correct view” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
