Wearing a Shirt Down to Mid-Shin Is Established by the Sunna

Question

Is wearing a kurta (a long loose shirt) down to mid-shin extravagance (wasteful) or not? Kindly give the answer in light of the hadith.

Answer

This noble hadith is found in Madarij al-Nubuwwa, in Safar al-Sa‘ada — the commentary on Zad al-Ma‘ad, and in the commentary on the Shama’il of al-Tirmidhi. Calling this extravagance is a mistake arising from unfamiliarity with the noble hadith.
