Are the Angels Able to Recite the Qur’an?
Question
In the book “‘Ilm al-Kalam”, compiled by the venerable Mawlana Muhammad Idris Kandhlawi, the words of Hafiz Ibn al-Salah are recorded, stating that the angels cannot recite the Noble Qur’an, but can only hear it. [ar]فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِ ذِكْرًا[/ar] “…and those who recite [His words] as a reminder” (Surah al-Saffat, 37:3) — what is meant by this, and also by the verse: [ar]فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَـٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ[/ar] “And when We have recited it, then follow its recitation” (Surah al-Qiyama, 75:18)?
Answer
Mawlana Muhammad Idris Kandhlawi has written correctly. When the venerable Jibril ﵇, having brought a verse of the Holy Qur’an, recited it [to the Prophet ﷺ], the Prophet ﷺ would begin repeating it along with him, out of fear of forgetting it. Regarding this it was revealed: [ar]لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ. إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ.
