The Teacher Sits on a Chair While the Children Sit on a Mat — What Is the Ruling?
Question
We have a religious madrasa in which the respected scholar sits on a chair, while in front of him the children sit below on a mat, holding the Qa‘ida Baghdadi (“The Baghdadi Primer” for learning to read the Qur’an) and the Noble Qur’an and so on. Is this method of teaching contrary to the Sacred Law or not? The children come and, standing, place the Noble Qur’an on a table, take their lesson and leave. What is the ruling of the Sacred Law regarding one who disrespects the Magnificent Qur’an?
Answer
This method of teaching — in which the children, holding the Noble Qur’an, sit on a mat or on the floor while the teacher sits there on a chair — is contrary to the Sunna and also contrary to the reverence due to the Magnificent Qur’an; it is not permitted.
