Giving Tafsir After Studying Only Sharh-i Jami
Question
A certain student studies “Sharh-i Jami”, “Kanz al-Daqa’iq”, and the like. Is it permissible for him, while reciting the Noble Qur’an, to understand its translation himself and to explain it to others? If this is permissible, then in that case is it haram or makruh? Mawlawi Wali Allah Ahmad Arkani says this is permissible, and states: if [the student] understands the meaning of the Noble Qur’an, then in my view there is no impermissibility in this, since the purpose of studying tafsir is to understand the meaning…
Answer
Explaining the lexical meaning, the morphological form, and the syntactic construction according to one’s own knowledge is permissible. But explaining the intent of the Lord is haram, because it rests upon many sciences, and those who read only “Sharh-i Jami” and “al-Kanz” are generally unacquainted with these sciences.
