Performing a Nikah at a Gathering with Prevalent Customs

Question

A nikah in which there are customs of bid‘a (innovation): for example, singing is being played, the groom has a rakhi (a ritual thread on the wrist), a ritual wedding bracelet on his hand, a sehra (wedding garland veil) on his head, and the edge of a cloth cast over his face. Is it permissible according to the Shari‘a to perform the nikah of such a groom — especially for a person who is a religious scholar (‘alim)

Answer

Going to such a gathering and performing the nikah there is prohibited by the Shari‘a and is disobedience (a sin); especially one who is followed as an example (muqtada) needs to exercise great caution. [ar]فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ (الآية)[/ar] “…then, after the reminder, do not sit…” (Surah al-An‘am, 6:68).
