The Qur’an and Na‘t over a Loudspeaker at a Nikah Gathering
Question
Here, at the weddings of religious scholars, there is a gathering with recitation of the Noble Qur’an and na‘t (poems in praise of the Prophet ﷺ); there is also a speech, and all of this takes place without a loudspeaker. Recently it happened that an unlettered person (ummi) got married, and this ummi invited two or three scholars for the recitation of the Noble Qur’an, the na‘t and a speech. Then, in the presence of these scholars, a minor boy was told to recite a na‘t over the loudspeaker.
Answer
At a nikah gathering, the sunna sermon (khutba) and offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) are established. The na‘t and the recitation of the Qur’an, although excellent things, are not established as an independent part of the nikah gathering. Moreover, adhering to it as a fixed practice is adhering to something not established, which is disapproved of in the Shari‘a.
