Band Music at a Wedding and Attending It
Question
Weddings today, such as they are, at which band music and the like is played, or else frame drums and the like are played — what is the ruling on attending such a wedding and eating there? Is playing band music permissible or impermissible? And what is the status of the livelihood of the one who plays band music? The imam of a certain mosque says that employment as a band player is correct.
Answer
Playing band music, making the instruments and being employed in it are all impermissible, and the income from it is also impermissible. Attending a wedding at which band music is played is also forbidden, and going there to eat is forbidden. One who holds impermissible employment should not be kept as mu’adhdhin. The ruling on frame drums is not so severe.
