The Effect of Superstitious Practices and Reprehensible Things on the Nikah
Question
At a wedding with superstitious practices (khurafat) — for example an all-night vigil, in which women sing and play instruments the whole night and make non-mahram men hear their voices — and at the time of the groom’s wedding procession there is an English band and other instruments, as well as other paraphernalia of dancing and music: on such an occasion are the people of the wedding merely committing a sin, or does the nikah not take place at all?
Answer
The superstitious practices mentioned are prohibited and impermissible. Taking part in such a wedding is also not right, but this does not affect the conclusion of the nikah: if the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) have taken place in accordance with the Shari‘a, the nikah is valid.
