Nikah with the Wife’s Stepmother
Question
May Zayd perform nikah with his step-mother-in-law (his wife’s stepmother), given that she is neither a paternal aunt nor a maternal aunt and the like? And if the nikah has already been performed, what is the ruling?
Answer
Two women between whom there is such a relationship that, if one of them is supposed to be a man, his nikah with the other would not be permissible — that is, the prohibition exists from both sides — may not be combined in nikah. If from one side the nikah is permissible and from the other there is a prohibition, then combining both is permissible.
