Nikah with a Stepsister Who Is Also a Milk Sister

Question

Zayd married his stepsister. This girl’s mother had died when she was fifteen days old. When she was three months old, she drank the milk of Zayd’s mother from the breast. She drank milk for about one year, and about fifteen or twenty people are witnesses to it. What is the ruling on this? And what is the ruling on praying behind the person who performed this nikah? Kindly give references from the Qur’an and hadith.

Answer

This nikah is haram; separating the two is wajib. Zayd, his sister, the one who performed the nikah, those who took part in the nikah, those who were pleased with this nikah, and those who, despite having the ability, did not prevent this nikah — all have become sinners. Public repentance (tawba) is necessary for all of them.
