Nikah with a Milk Sister

Question

When Khalid’s mother was in the throes of death, Rashida’s mother suckled Khalid; and when Rashida’s mother was on the point of death, Khalid’s mother suckled Rashida. Later Rashida was married to Afsar, and they also have a four-year-old son. The present situation is that Khalid’s marriage to Jamila is soon to take place. What is the ruling of the Shari‘a in the case asked about? Kindly inform us, so that the truth may be made manifest. Note: Rahima Bi had two husbands, and both have passed away.

Answer

The woman whose milk Khalid drank has become his milk mother. Khalid’s nikah with any of her children is not valid: [ar]وَيَحْرُمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ مَا يَحْرُمُ مِنَ النَّسَبِ[/ar] “What is prohibited by lineage is prohibited by suckling” (“Shami”, vol. 2, p. 330).
