The Ruling on Nikah with a Milk Sister

Question

There is a man, let us suppose Zayd. He has two sons; the first son has a daughter and the second a son. The son of the second son drank milk from the breast of his (paternal) grandmother, while the daughter of the first son did not drink milk. Now tell us: can a marriage take place between the daughter and the son of the two sons or not, given that the second boy drank his grandmother’s milk? Can marriage be forbidden to them by virtue of the ruling on suckling, or will the ruling of milk kinship not apply?

Answer

The boy who drank his grandmother’s milk within the period of suckling (muddat al-rada‘a) — that grandmother has become his milk mother. Now this boy’s marriage with any of this grandmother’s children or her children’s children is not valid according to the Shari‘a, whether or not any of them drank this grandmother’s milk.
