Marriage to the Wife of One’s Stepson

Question

(1) Zayd married a woman who also has a son with her. Zayd also arranged this boy’s marriage. After that, the woman and the boy died. May Zayd marry his stepson’s wife or not? (2) If the boy’s mother is alive and in Zayd’s marriage, may Zayd even then marry the wife of this stepson of his or not?

Answer

(1) If no other impediment in the Shari‘a exists, he may, according to the words of the Exalted: [ar]أُحِلَّ لَكُم مَّا وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكُمْ[/ar] “Lawful to you is what lies beyond these” (Surah al-Nisa’, 4:24). A stepson is not a son in the Shari‘a such that marriage to his wife would be impermissible. (2)
