Saying the Takbir during the Khutba
Question
Zayd, after the Eid prayer, delivered the khutba standing. When the takbir — i.e. “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar” — came, Zayd said the takbir, and along with Zayd all the muqtadis also began to say it. Zayd said: “Do not say it aloud, because this is forbidden.” To this an objector says: “What you said is wrong.” The question to be clarified is: is there any difference between the silent and the audible takbir or not, and what is the ruling on each?
Answer
Everyone should listen to the khutba in silence; at such a time it is forbidden for the listeners to say anything, such as the takbir and the like. [ar]إذا خرج الإمام فلا صلاة ولا كلام، والصواب أنه يصلي على النبي ﷺ عند سماع اسمه في نفسه، ولا يجب تشميت ولا رد سلام، به يفتى.
