The khutba in the Urdu language
Question
In our city a firmly adhered-to custom has taken root: the Jumu‘a khutba must also be in Urdu, otherwise strife (fasad) is an absolute certainty (haqq al-yaqin). In such a situation Zayd, who knows the rulings of Jumu‘a, can deliver the khutba in Urdu as well; if he does not, there is fear of a widespread affliction (‘umum al-balwa). The question is: which path should Zayd adopt?
Answer
A khutba in Urdu is makruh tahrimi. [ar]مَنِ ابْتُلِيَ بِبَلِيَّتَيْنِ فَلْيَخْتَرْ أَهْوَنَهُمَا[/ar] “Whoever is afflicted with two afflictions, let him choose the lesser of the two.”
