Delivering the khutba in Urdu

Question

Is it permissible to deliver the khutba in Urdu? Some people say that the addressees of the Prophet ﷺ knew Arabic, whereas our addressees do not know Arabic, and therefore they deliver the khutba in Urdu. Is this correct?

Answer

That the Jumu‘a khutba [is delivered] only in Arabic has been inherited (mutawarath) and continuously transmitted (mutawatir). The noble Companions ﵃ conquered the non-Arab lands, and there too they delivered the khutba only in Arabic. Throughout the whole world this very practice has continued.
