The environs of the city (fina' al-misr)
Question
After the end of the environs of the city (fina' al-misr), is there some further limit of a certain number of farsakhs within which Jumu'a is permissible? (2) Outside the city, beyond the municipal limits, for three or four miles along the road there are usually brick kilns and lime kilns. May these be counted among the needs of the city so that the term “environs of the city” is applied there, or not?
Answer
(1) Hazrat Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa ﵀ did not set any limit of distance for the environs of the city, and a group of the verifying scholars (muhaqqiqun) followed him. From Imam Abu Yusuf ﵀, Imam Muhammad ﵀ and the later [scholars] ten or eleven opinions are reported. In “al-Durr al-Mukhtar” (p. 837) a fatwa is cited from “al-Walwalijiyya” on [a limit of] one farsakh.
