Jumu‘a in a Village and Drawing an Analogy with the Ta‘ziya
Question
Jumu‘a is held in villages — should it be forbidden or not? If it is stopped, some people who come on Friday only to pray Jumu‘a will abandon [prayer] altogether. Some people regard it as a sign of Islam, just as they regard the ta‘ziya (a replica of Imam Husayn’s tomb carried in Muharram) as a sign. Please write concerning this.
Answer
In a village where the conditions of Jumu‘a are not present, it is fard to pray Zuhr there in congregation. By praying Jumu‘a the obligation of Zuhr is not lifted: [ar]ولو صلوا في القرى لزمهم أداء الظهر[/ar] “If they pray [Jumu‘a] in villages, performing Zuhr remains binding upon them” (Shami, vol. 1, p. 537).
