Hijra

Question

Question: In the ruku‘ after the middle of the fifth juz’ it is stated that the angels will take out with torment the souls of those people who were overpowered somewhere and kept on living there, although Allah’s earth is spacious — except for those women, children and old people who do not know the way to go elsewhere. What I wish to ask is: on what occasions does this apply, and what is the background of the revelation?

Answer

At first, after the hijra to Madina Tayyiba, making hijra was necessary (lazim) for the acceptance of Islam; then, when Makka Mu‘azzama was conquered, this ruling on hijra also came to an end. Imam al-Baghawi ﵀ wrote likewise in his tafsir.
