Is the Fighting in Burma Jihad?

Question

Question: In 1942 the Thakin Party of Burma, having armed itself with modern weapons through the mediation of foreign countries, carried out a massacre of the Muslims of Burma in general and of the Muslims of Arakan in particular, in which about one hundred thousand Muslims were martyred. It drove many Muslims into exile and abducted approximately ten thousand Muslim women. (2) After this a decisive battle took place between the Thakin Party and the Muslims of Northern Arakan, in which China also took part.

Answer

The rulings and conditions of jihad are set out in detail in the books of fiqh, and they are well known to the ‘ulama’. What opinion the local ‘ulama’ there, who are not few in number, form after examining all these circumstances — that is what needs to be asked of them.
