Question
Honoured and respected sir, may your noble qualities increase! As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Question: In “Bihishti Zewar” (“Heavenly Ornaments”; Akhtari edition, vol. 2, p. 55), in the section on shrouding, masala 9, it is written that placing (in the grave), for tabarruk (seeking blessing), the covering of the Noble Ka‘ba, the handkerchief of one’s spiritual guide or the like — some piece of cloth — is permissible. What benefit is there in this, and what is the proof of its benefit?
Answer
In “Mishkat al-Masabih” (chapter on washing and shrouding the deceased, p. 143) an agreed-upon (muttafaq ‘alayh) hadith is transmitted from Umm ‘Atiyya ﵂: the Prophet ﷺ, when his daughter was being washed, said: “When you have finished washing, inform me”: [ar]فلما فرغنا آذناه، فألقى إلينا حقوه فقال: أشعرنها إياه (الحديث)
