Writing on the shroud
Question
For a long time the question of whether writing on the shroud is permissible or not has been debated in our country. A certain man has written in a periodical that writing on the shroud is an act that brings reward (thawab); in proof of this he quoted the Arabic text of al-Durr al-Mukhtar together with a translation, and he also cited some books, without quoting their text, as proof of its permissibility.
Answer
Writing anything on the shroud of the deceased is not established by the Noble Qur’an, the noble hadith, the consensus (ijma‘) of the Umma, or the analogical reasoning (qiyas) of a mujtahid, and the practice of one who is not a mujtahid is not a valid proof in the Sacred Law.
