Whose responsibility is a woman’s shroud?
Question
A woman is usually given her shroud by her parents. Is it a ruling of the Shari‘a that a woman’s shroud should not come from her in-laws?
Answer
No, this is not a ruling of the Shari‘a; rather it is a custom contrary to the Shari‘a. According to the Shari‘a, the shroud is the husband’s responsibility; if he lacks the means, then the shroud is to be given from the woman’s estate. Thus it is in the books of fiqh, among them al-Durr al-Mukhtar (and Tahtawi, p. 482).
