A Wage for Reciting the Qur’an to Listeners
Question
Hafizes are invited from outside to recite the Holy Qur’an in Ramadan, and after the khatm (completion) of the Qur’an, on the twenty-seventh of Ramadan, the people who invited them give the hafiz of the Qur’an some sums in cash, clothes and the like; the scholars of Deoband declare taking this haram. But in order to avoid this prohibition, if the hafiz of the Qur’an who is invited only for the tarawih leads the five obligatory prayers, and he is given a pre-agreed sum on the pretext (hila)
Answer
There is latitude in this. The way to do it is that the imam be appointed for the five daily prayers and a fixed sum be agreed upon (the jurists have permitted this); then he may lead the tarawih as well.
