A Wage for Reciting the Qur’an to Listeners

Question

A certain man is a hafiz of the Qur’an. For a period of sixteen or seventeen years, on the occasion of the blessed month of Ramadan, he has been reciting to people in mosques, and at the khatm (completion) of the Noble Qur’an he receives a considerable sum every year by way of custom; he saves what remains of it and adds it to the same capital.

Answer

All these things are permissible, provided that compensation for the amount of the impermissible money is paid. Taking any sum for reciting the Noble Qur’an to listeners is impermissible even without asking for it, because what is customary is like what is stipulated (li-anna al-ma‘ruf ka-l-mashrut).
