May a rapist be killed with poison?

Question

Zayd is forcibly robbing the honour of other people’s daughters-in-law and daughters: he seizes women when they are caught unawares and attempts forcible zina (rape). People are distressed. Is it permissible to give such a person poison or to take his life?

Answer

Moral and legal measures should be taken to stop his base acts; he must not be killed by giving him poison.
