The Prohibition of Hunting in the State of Ihram
Question
In the state of ihram, hunting on land is prohibited, but not hunting in the water. Why is this so?
Answer
Allah Most Pure has said just this: [ar]أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ ٱلْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُۥ مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ ۖ وَحُرِّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَيْدُ ٱلْبَرِّ مَا دُمْتُمْ حُرُمًا[/ar] “Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food, as provision for you and for travellers; and forbidden to you is the game of the land as long as you are in ihram” (Surah al-Ma’ida, 5:96).
