The effect of a boycott on the deceased
Question
A boycott had been declared against the father of a certain Zayd over a few trivial matters. When the father died, the community (jama‘at) announced its decision that whoever took part in the funeral (janaza) would be given a suitable punishment. The board for washing the dead is also there (?), and the bier — all were forbidden; even the imam of the mosque was prevented from leading the prayer, the tailor was made to refuse to sew the shroud, and the Muslim shopkeeper was forbidden to sell the shroud.
Answer
This action of the community is the most severe oppression and injustice. When a death occurs, even enemies who are strangers come and show sympathy, and at that time they do not let hatred and enmity affect them.
