Using a dream as proof for innovations

Question

Question: Here the people of innovation (bid‘a) light lamps on graves and also perform the customary qiyam (standing). When they are forbidden from this, they say: “A few days ago we stopped lighting lamps and performing qiyam, but we saw in a dream that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was scolding us: ‘Why have you stopped lighting lamps and performing qiyam?

Answer

Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited in the waking state — where that prohibition is found in the noble hadith, the hadith scholars narrate it with a chain of transmission (isnad), and the mujtahids derive proofs from it — is a proof (hujja) in its own right.
