For how long one may stay away on a journey after marriage

Question

A man married and afterwards, having arranged food and maintenance for his wife, went away to acquire knowledge, but his wife did not give him permission. Is this act permissible or not? And for how long may he stay away?

Answer

The wife has a right besides food and maintenance as well — what provision was made for that? If she is young and could not control her desires, her right will be lost. However, if she has control over herself, has willingly given permission for so long a period, and there is no danger of any sin, then it is permitted; otherwise he should come to her once every four months.
