Women going out to work for hire

Question

Question: We belong to a poor family, and from former times the profession of catching fish and selling it has been carried on in our family. All the men and women of the household live by earning with the strength of their own arms. But that was a noble age: the honour of others was regarded as one’s own honour. Today, however, the atmosphere of the times has produced in everyone’s heart urges towards mischief and shamelessness.

Answer

Everyone knows the evil of shamelessness and immorality; no one is unaware of it. In such a situation a fatwa alone is not enough; rather, instruction should be arranged: religious books should be read aloud in homes, a connection for reform (islah) should be established with pious elders, and sermons of the scholars of truth should be arranged.
