The wronged person should return the salam of the wrongdoer
Question
If a wrongdoer greets the one he has wronged with salam, and the wronged person, because of his grief, anger and aversion, does not reply, is the wronged person a sinner according to the Shari‘a? Is it wajib for the wronged person, according to the Shari‘a, to return the salam of the wretched wrongdoer? And does the Shari‘a permit the wronged person to kick away the salam of his wrongdoer with a shoe (i.e. spurn it with contempt)?
Answer
Salam is a distinguishing mark (shi‘ar) of Islam and a right of a Muslim, and replying to it is wajib. The wronged person should not harm his store for the Hereafter by abandoning the reply to salam, nor take upon himself the burden of abandoning a wajib.
