Salam to one whose knees are uncovered
Question
A man is sitting with his knees uncovered. Another comes to him. Should the newcomer greet the seated man with salam or not?
Answer
According to the Hanafis the knee is ‘awra, and greeting with salam one whose ‘awra is uncovered is written to be makruh: [ar]ودع كافراً أيضاً ومكشوف عورة ومن هو في حال التغوط أشنع[/ar] “Leave also a kafir and one whose ‘awra is uncovered; and one who is in the state of relieving himself — all the more so” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”, vol. 1, p. 645).
