Who should give salam to whom?

[ar]قال النبي ﷺ: يسلم الراكب على الماشي، والماشي على القاعد، والقليل على الكثير[/ar] “The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘The rider greets the one walking, the one walking greets the one sitting, and the few greet the many.’” If the one arriving does not give salam, and the one sitting gives salam to the one arriving, or if a person gives salam to someone behind his back — will he deserve reward or deserve punishment?

Answer

In this case too he will deserve reward, although the better way is the one mentioned in the noble hadith. [ar]قال ابن بطال عن المهلب: تسليم الصغير لأجل حق الكبير؛ لأنه أمر بتوقيره والتواضع له، وتليم القليل لأجل حق الكثير؛ لأن حقه أعظم، وتسليم المار لشبهه بالداخل على المنزل، وتسليم الراكب لئلا يتكبر بركوبه فيرجع إلى التواضع.
