A cap on a tooth
Question
Between Zayd and ‘Abid the discussion on this matter has reached an unpleasant degree. Zayd says that if a person fits a cap on his tooth — whether it is gold, silver or steel — it is haram in every case; nothing of his — neither his prayer nor his ghusl from janaba — is valid, and praying behind him is not correct.
Answer
If it is difficult for the tooth to stay in place without a cap, then fitting a silver cap is correct. If at the time of ghusl one is unable to remove it, the ghusl will be valid even without removing it, and the prayer will also be valid. Regarding a gold cap there is disagreement; caution lies in avoiding it.
