Gold buttons on a kurta
Question
Using gold is haram for men, yet the former chief mufti, Hazrat Mawlana Mufti ‘Aziz al-Rahman ﵀, wrote in his “Fatawa Dar al-‘Ulum” that it is permissible for men to use gold buttons. Bringing evidence from “al-Durr al-Mukhtar” and other books, he said that since these buttons are not independent but follow the garment, it is correct. Is it really correct or not?
Answer
If the gold buttons are woven (sewn) into the kurta (shirt), then, following the kurta, they are permissible: [ar]لا بأس بأزرار الديباج أو الذهب[/ar] “There is no harm in buttons of brocade (dibaj) or gold” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar” in the margin of “al-Shamiyya”, vol. 5, p. 348).
