Gold and silver teeth

Question

The incident of a Companion having a cover fitted on his nose is this: in “Mazahir-i Haqq” (vol. 3, Kitab al-libas, p. 499), with reference to al-Tirmidhi, it is narrated from Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Tarafa that the grandfather, ‘Arfaja ibn As‘ad, had his nose cut off on the day of Kulab; so he made it of silver, but that nose began to stink; so the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to make a nose of gold. On the basis of this proof, have some scholars declared it permissible?

Answer

I have seen this incident in many books and I also remember it, but you had written in your letter that it was in a jihad, whereas this incident took place several years even before prophethood; therefore I had doubt and hesitated. At the time this incident took place, Hazrat ‘Arfaja ﵁ had not even become a Muslim yet.
