Silver and gold teeth, and the use of silver and gold wire and caps for teeth

Question

(1) Some men’s and women’s teeth begin to loosen from weakness, because of which men and women have silver and gold caps fitted on their teeth, or have their teeth bound with silver or gold wire for firmness. Is it permissible for men and women to have a cap of gold and silver fitted or to have soldering done on the teeth, or not? Or is it allowed only for women — then what is the ruling for men? (2)

Answer

According to Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀, gold is prohibited and silver is allowed; according to Imam Muhammad ﵀, both are allowed. In “Fatawa ‘Alamgiri” (p. 336) a narration (riwaya) from Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀ as well is cited in agreement with Imam Muhammad ﵀; therefore there is latitude. And in this, man and woman have one and the same ruling. (2)
