Silver and gold teeth

Question

When a tooth breaks, is it permissible to have a gold or silver tooth, pin or plate fitted in its place over the tooth, or not?

Answer

According to the Imam A‘zam ﵀, having a silver pin, plate or tooth fitted is permissible, and having a gold pin, plate or tooth fitted is not permissible. According to Imam Muhammad ﵀, a gold pin and the like is also correct. Because of the disagreement, refraining from a gold pin and the like is more cautious (ahwat).
