A gold setting (stone) in a ring
Question
May a man use gold in a ring as its setting or not? If the answer is in the negative, then what will be the meaning of the text of al-Hidaya (Kitab al-Karahiyya): [ar]وَالْحَلْقَةُ هِيَ الْمُعْتَبَرَةُ؛ لِأَنَّ قِوَامَ الْخَاتَمِ بِهَا، وَلَا مُعْتَبَرَ بِالْفَصِّ، حَتَّى يَجُوزَ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنْ حَجَرٍ[/ar] “What counts is the band (halqa), because the ring subsists by it, and the setting (fass) is of no account, so that it may be of stone”?
Answer
A silver ring has been declared permissible for a man, and its weight has been fixed so that it does not exceed this. In connection with this matter, the author of al-Hidaya wrote that what is meant is not the combined weight of the band and the setting; rather, this limit on weight applies to the band.
