The ruling on dyeing the hair (khidab)
Question
Question: What is the ruling on applying dye (khidab)? If it is impermissible, then why do some of the elders of the umma do such a thing, from which the common people take proof?
Answer
Dyeing (khidab) with red henna is permissible without any reprehensibility (karaha). Black dye, by which the blackness of the hair appears to be its natural blackness, is makruh tahrimi. However, it is permissible for a mujahid in the state of jihad and to strike fear into the enemies. According to Imam Abu Yusuf ﵀ there is also latitude (for it)
