A woman using a brassiere

Question

Question: What is the ruling on a woman using a brassiere? Is the ruling the same for both kinds of brassiere, i.e. one that flattens the breasts and one that lifts them, or is there a difference? Also, what is the ruling on using lipstick, sindoor (red powder applied to the parting of the hair) and the like for adornment?

Answer

Using anything that is a distinctive mark (shi‘ar) of disbelievers and sinners (fasiqs) is prohibited, and the prohibition of the religious distinctive marks of disbelievers is very severe. Whatever is a distinctive mark of men is prohibited for women to use. Clothing that reveals and accentuates the shape of the body is also prohibited for them.
